Restoring the mauri to Rotoitipaku (industrial waste site): Implementing matauranga in a scientific paradigm

Trustees of the former Lake Rotoitipaku, taken under the Tasman Enabling Act and used as an industrial waste dump site for more than 30 years, have entrusted us to provide them with the means to make informed decisions about the future of their land. The Trustees are looking to “science” as the means to make their informed decisions, but at present do not have the capacity to develop their own scientific research nor accessibility to those that do. With the land due to be returned in 2013, the Trustees have charged us with developing and executing a scientific programme that will help provide a pathway(s) for restoring the mauri to their whenua. Ultimately, the science and the delivery of the results will help in devising a restoration plan that must involve navigating and investigating the interface between science and matauranga
